There’s no harder start than going in to Derry – Gallen

DONEGAL star Oisin Gallen says the county footballers know how important the Anglo Celt Cup is and they will be aiming for a better showing in the Ulster Championship in 2023.

Donegal have enjoyed great success in the province over the last 12 years, but lost out against Down in the quarter-final last term.

That was disappointing at the time, but there is huge enthusiasm for the new season following Jim McGuinness’s appointment as manager.

Donegal have been handed a tough quarter-final against reigning champions Derry in 2024 but Gallen is looking forward to what should be a cracking contest.

“There’s heavy importance on the Ulster Championship.

“We had a great run of it from 2018 up until 2020 and that Cavan final.

“Last year was disappointing with the Down game. Obviously we bounced back after that but I’m sure we won’t be hoping for an exit like that next year.

“We know what the Anglo Celt means for Donegal people and the importance it has in Ulster, and everybody will be hoping to bring it back to the Diamond.

“There’s no harder start than going in to Derry. If you’re going to win it, you’re going to have to do it the hard way but that’s the Ulster Championship and what it brings.”

Gallen was speaking at the launch of the new Donegal jersey at the Abbey Hotel today and he likes the design.

“It looks well.

“Fair play to O’Neill’s and the County Board for getting it designed and made.

“It looks well and it looks fresh, and I’m looking forward to getting to wear it next year.”
