‘There are no easy games in this league’ – Cowan

BY STUART CONNOLLY

Letterkenny Rovers defender Keith Cowan knows exactly what to expect on Sunday afternoon as his side travel to the Station Road to face Kildrum Tigers in the Brian McCormick Sports Premier Division.

Just one goal was scored in the three meetings between the sides last season as Rovers triumphed in the Ulster Cup Final, and the former Harps player is well aware of the capabilities of their next opponent.

“They always give very little away,” said Cowan.

“They’re well organised, dogged, and they can nick something at any moment.

“We had two 0-0 draws in the league last season so if anyone is thinking of coming out, they could probably stay in the house, it could be another one or it could be five each, you never know,” he quipped.

“They could have nicked it at home last season, and we could have done that here. We edged it in the cup final, but we know that there won’t be any yards or inches given after 1pm.

“There are no easy games in this league, it’ll be another game during a long season and we’ll give it everything to get three points.”

In Letterkenny Rovers’ most recent outing, it proved to be a difficult afternoon against Keadue Rovers at Leckview Park, and Cowan admitted it was just one of those days, but a clean sheet was always welcome.

“I think a draw was the fair result,” he said.

“We didn’t do enough to win the game, and I thought Keadue had the better of it in the first half. They worked hard, were well organised and showed endeavour, and were able to come away with a point after playing really well.

“They created a bit for themselves, they were sharper to things, and they had a speculative effort that hit the bar in the second half, it was a great strike, and another in the first half that caught the outside of the post.

“We improved in the second half, and we had them pinned in a bit more, but we weren’t able to get that goal.

“I felt we were untroubled for large parts of this game, we looked in control in a way, it was up to us to break them down, but their setup made it very difficult for us.

“We perhaps didn’t get that bit of luck that you need sometimes, but it’s still very early in the season.

“We’ll take the positive from it because it’s a clean sheet. Yes, we want to win our home games, we want to win every game, and we’ll go again next week against Kildrum Tigers.”
