LOCAL primary school children have been given a sneak preview of what is possibly the world’s smallest cinema in advance of Ireland’s most Northerly Film Festival.
The unique cinema–for-one has been created in a telephone box on the Malin’s village green for the Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival which is happening this weekend in Inishowen.
The traditional Eircom telephone box will be engaged during festival for the screening of the multi-award-winning Irish documentary ‘Bye Bye Now’ which tells the story of the rise and fall of the Irish phone box.
The much photographed green and yellow kiosk in Malin even has a starring role in the poignant 15-minute-long film by Aideen O’Sullivan and Ross Whitaker.
One by one, audience members will take a seat in the darkened phonebox to watch the film on a 25cm screen with headphones.
The phone box is one of six screens that will transform the village (pop. 100 plus), over the festival weekend, which opens tomorrow, Thursday 16 May.
27 filmmakers, among them some of the top documentary makers in the world, will converge on the village close to Ireland’s most northerly point.
Over the weekend, 30 award winning films from 15 countries will be shown on screens created in the local hotel, the parish hall, the old courthouse and the village green. The cinemobile will also be in town for the festival.
Among the highlights of this year’s festival will be a live solo performance by the extraordinary and unconventional Finnish accordion player, Kimmo Pohjonen whose film, Soundbreaker, will be screened in Malin and in Derry, as part of the city of culture.
Pohjonen will perform live at the Foyle Theatre, Derry on Friday night 17 May and on Saturday will conduct a workshop in Malin.
Local acts The Henry Girls and Kate O’Callaghan head an exciting line up of live entertainment at the Festival Club in the Malin Hotel.
