AS unusual as it sounds, The Vengaboys are coming…to west Donegal.
The Europop dance outfit enjoyed huge commercial success in the late 1990s with hits including Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!, We’re Going to Ibiza and We Like to Party.
The passing of time has done little to dampen the appetite for the colourful Dutch quartet and they continue to sell out venues all over the world.
Their latest tour includes a string of dates in their native Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, England and Scotland. Slotted in there too is an Easter Sunday visit to Gaoth Dobhair where they will share the bill with fellow popstars 5ive.
The invitation was extended by Ace Promotions, a company that has in the past brought a host of big names to Donegal. Among those who have taken to the famous Sean Óg’s stage are Paul Brady, Damien Dempsey and Roison O.
Ace Promotions has lined up an entire Easter weekend of events which climaxes with the ‘Memories’ night of nostalgia in The Big Top.
A spokesperson for Ace said the idea was always to bring a bit of fun to the west of the county.
“We want to create a bit of a buzz and to give people a night out where they don’t have to travel too far,” they said.
Things kick off on Easter Saturday with Fracture, an evening of music for fans of electronic music. Set to perform are Alan Fitzpatrick, Mark Blair, Dense and Pika, Fiona Curran and homegrown star Modea who hails from Newtowncunningham.
Sunday sees a session of the increasingly popular Bingo Loco but with a special festival twist. Rather than the traditional seated bingo, it will be a stand up affair but with all the usual shenanigans.
After Bingo Loco it will be The Vengaboys followed by 5ive featuring three of the original members – Ritchie Neville, Scott Robinson and Sean Conlon.
“It is shaping up to be a great weekend and for us it is about giving people that fun factor,” said Ace Promotions.
“The Vengaboys are drawing massive crowds wherever they go and everyone knows who 5ive are. And then you have Bingo Loco and their special festival stand up performance which should be really exciting to see.”
Fracture takes place on April 8 followed by Memories on Easter Sunday.
