A staggering 78.4 per cent of all roads deaths in the county in that period which happened on Friday, Saturday or Sunday involved excessive speed.
Road Safety Authority (RSA) CEO, Mr Noel Brett told the audience in LYIT on Wednesday that while Donegal’s record on road deaths had been ‘appalling’, education and enforcement were delivering results.
Between 1996 and 2009 a total of 307 road users were killed in Donegal. This figure represented 6 per cent of all road deaths in Ireland yet Donegal only made up 3.5 per cent of the population. A further 1,184 people were seriously injured on the county’s roads in the same period.
In 2010 there were 19 people killed on the county’s roads, ten less than in 2004. To date this year there have been three people killed on the county’s roads.
Mr Brett launched the new road safety initiative ‘Donegal – Your Road to Safety’ which will see the RSA and An Garda Síochána visit counties around Ireland in an effort to assist local agencies strengthen road safety in their communities.
