Owenie McGarvey was highly-respected during his playing days with Naomh Muire, and he also represented Donegal Boston and the Donegal Vocational Schools team.

He came up against some top quality players during that time, and has this week picked the best fifteen he faced.

David ‘Buddy’ Greene: David was a brilliant goalkeeper with a massive kick-out.

Ryan McCluskey (Fermanagh): Played against Ryan when I was out in Boston, and saw him in action for the summer and he was a great man-marker.

Eamonn Reddin (Burt): Eamonn probably didn’t play enough, but he was a really good defender.

Thomas Cullen (Termon): A Termon stalwart who was to tog out for their thirds this year, but the virus has unfortunately put paid to that.

Michael Maguire (Naomh Columba): Naomh Columba’s go-to man whenever they were in trouble.

Frank McGlynn (Glenfin): Frank was a quality player for the county and he also drove his club on as well.

Shane McGowan (Bundoran): Any day we came up against Bundoran, we had to put someone on Shane McGowan.

John Gildea (Naomh Conaill): We played Glenties in the championship in the early 2000s when Gildea was at his peak. He was a handful.

Paddy McNulty (Sean MacCumhaills): We had a good rivalry with MacCumhaills for a few years, and you always had your hands full when Paddy was out around the middle.

Mark Little (Fermanagh): I marked Little in Boston one day for thirty minutes. He had pace… I didn’t!

Michael Hegarty (Kilcar): We would have come up against Mickey a lot at underage level. A class act.

John Duffy (Aodh Ruadh): We played against Aodh Ruadh twice in the Championship in 1999. They were brilliant games, and John was full of tricks.

Brian McLaughlin (St Michael’s): Before Christy Toye and Colm Anthony McFadden, Big Brian was the man to watch whenever we played against St Michael’s.

Adrian Sweeney (Dungloe): I marked ‘Eddie’ one day and did well for forty minutes. Then somebody from our team said something to upset him, and I bore the brunt of it. He finished with 1-4.

Stephen Griffin (St Naul’s): St Naul’s were another team that we came up against a lot. Stephen was always their main threat, brilliant from frees and from play.
