The Best XV I Played Against: Anthony McGrenra

Anthony McGrenra has had a long and fruitful career with his club Termon, and is aiming to play adult football with the Burn Road outfit in a fourth decade when the action returns.

He has come up against some top quality players over the last twenty years, and last week picked the best fifteen he has faced.

He also listed Denis Boyle (Cloughaneely), Paul ‘Rua’ McBride and Padraig McGarvey (Gaoth Dobhair), JP Boyle (Naomh Muire), Kevin McGlynn (Glenfin), Ciaran McElwaine and Seamie ‘Coshia’ Friel (Fanad) as players who were strongly considered but just missed out.

Sean Sweeney (Gaoth Dobhair): I played against Sean a lot at underage – a good shot-stopper and he had good kick-outs.

Damian Diver (Ardara):
Excellent player in early 00’s for club and county, and alongside Brendan Boyle was the heartbeat of the Ardara team. He played in the forwards occasionally for Ardara and was a handful.

Eamon Ward (Glenswilly): Wrestling cattle in his day job as a vet is much the same as how he handles forwards, as Jimmy ‘the Decent’ would say he throws men about like rag dolls.

Doalty Boyle (Dungloe):
Doalty is mad for action whether the ball is in the vicinity or not. He’s a tight marking, physical corner back – every team should have one.

Ray Sweeney (Dungloe): One of the most consistent club footballers in Donegal in the late 90’s, 00’s and 10’s could play anywhere from 2 to 15.

Patrick McConigley (Gaeil Fhánada): Came up against Paddy in gaelic and soccer with club and school during the 90’s and 00’s. He was a fierce competitor who loved the physicality of the game as well as being very good on the ball.

Kevin Cassidy (Gaoth Dobhair):
From Under 14’s right up to last year, Cassidy was up there with hardest opponent I came up against. He relishes the physical stuff, unbelievably strong in the air, and loved the Stevie G outside of the foot shots.

Mickey McGlynn (Glenfin):
Another seriously consistent operator throughout the 00’s and 10’s for Glenfin, always available for a pass and a serious score getter in his earlier days.

Kevin Rafferty (St Eunan’s): The most consistent club player in the county in the 00’s and 10’s. Rarely, if ever, had a poor game for Eunan’s and was the heartbeat of their team.

BJ Padden (Belmullet): I had to attempt to man mark Billy Joe in Spiddal at the Gaeltacht finals in 2006, eighty minutes later the legs were gone. Belmullet pipped us by a point after extra-time and went on to win the All-Ireland.

Adrian Sweeney (Dungloe): Came up against ‘Eddie’ a good few times in last 15 years and he was almost impossible to mark. Any chance and he was fit to horse the ball over the bar from ridiculous angles.

Ciaran Bonner (Glenswilly): Outside Big Neil and Murphy, Bonner was Glenswilly’s main man throughout the 00’s and 10’s. He had serious strength and skill, and was well able to kick a score.

Tommy Hourihane (Bundoran): I went up against big Tommy first in 2001 and didn’t cross paths again until 2011. From then on, we seemed to play Bundoran annually. I always found Tommy hard to handle as he had a serious left peg on him, and always seemed to flick/punch a ball to the net against us.

Fergal Heena (Ardara): I marked Fergal four times in late 90’s and early 00’s and got roasted the four times. Serious pace, great ability to win the ball out in front, and lethal in front of goal.

Brian Roper (Aodh Ruadh):
We played Ballyshannon in the championship a few times in early 00’s and Roper was a seriously tough operator. He loved the physical stuff and would then burn you for pace before clipping it over the bar.
