David Craig is a well-known figure in Donegal soccer circles, and has played locally for the best part of last twenty years.
He has represented Raphoe Town, Drumkeen United, Kildrum Tigers, and Convoy Arsenal over the years. Craig is still lining out for Raphoe.
He has gone up against some top quality players over the years and this week has picked the best 11 (4-4-2) he faced.
John Roulstone
I would have played more with John than against him. We are good mates so he’d never want me to score past him. I remember hitting one when he played for Swilly and I played for Kildrum, and for all the world I thought it was in, but somehow he got his fingertip to it. I reckon if it had been anyone else he’d have let it go in!
Dermot Kelly
I played alongside Dermot at Kildrum for many years but played against him a few times as well. A strong, quick defender. Great going forward and can put in a cross. Loves a nutmeg too!
Arthur Lynch
I played against Arthur a lot in the USL. He was part of a very strong Fanad side that competed with Kildrum for the title most years in the mid-noughties. A very good defender and never missed much in the air.
Padraig Porter
Padraig and I played together with Raphoe Town growing up. I would have played against him when he was with Convoy Arsenal. Super defender. Not many keep Ronan Coyle quiet but I’ve seen Padraig do it a few times.
John Sweeney
John ‘Slugger’ Sweeney. Hard, strong defender and not easy to get by on his day. When you went into a tackle with him you knew all about it (and still did a week later!).
Paddy McGrenaghan
I played left midfield so would have been directly up against Paddy when he played with Fanad. Always hated playing against him. He loved twisting and turning and also was very strong. I was always exhausted after playing against him.
Chris Malseed
Chris and I played against each other a lot from underage upwards. A real box-to-box midfielder, full of energy and always available to take a pass. Would have had many battles against him down through the years.
David Shovlin
Mr Versatile, can play anywhere. Fiercely competitive, super fit and very good on the ball. Always knew I was in a game any time I played against him. He is one of the few from Donegal that can say they have an Intermediate medal.
Benny McLaughlin
Great left foot! Saw Benny score some wonderful goals. Very tidy on the ball in tight positions and I rarely saw him give it away. Always found it tough against him.
Dara Patton
Played a lot against Dara at youth and senior level. A very good player and always seemed to score important goals. In my first season in USL the League went to a play-off between Kildrum and Fanad. If memory serves me right I think it was Dara that scored the winner.
Ronan Coyle
I would have played more with Ronan, at Kildrum and Drumkeen, than against him. He was the best player in the USL for about ten years. Unbelievable touch. Wouldn’t matter what type of pass he got, he would control it. He knew where the net was too!
