An exciting endurance challenge will return to the northwest of Donegal this spring, as the Balor Multisport Race takes place over the weekend of April 24th – 26th.
Now in its second year, Balor is quickly establishing itself as one of Ireland’s most unique and demanding endurance events. Competitors will take on a 225 kilometre marked loop combining running, cycling and kayaking through some of Donegal’s most spectacular and rugged landscapes.
The race is organised by Creeslough native and experienced adventure racer Shaun Stewart, who created the event to showcase Donegal as a world-class destination for endurance sport. “After a successful first year, it’s fantastic to be bringing the race back for 2026,” says Stewart. “The feedback from athletes was really positive, they loved the course, the challenge and the scenery, and we’re excited to welcome both returning competitors and newcomers to Donegal this year”.
Starting in Dunfanaghy, competitors have 22 hours to complete the 225km course, which includes 47km of running, 167km of cycling and 11km of flat-water kayaking. “It’s a great mix of terrain, from Errigal Mountain and kayaking on Dunlewey Lake to some gruelling cycling along the coast. Last year’s solo winner Johan Muller from France completed the course in 11 hours, but many will be out there for 20 hours, really testing themselves against the course and the elements” explains Stewart.
The race is open to solo competitors or teams of two to three, allowing athletes to either take on the full challenge individually or share the stages among teammates. “The team option is important,” says Stewart. “It encourages people who are new to multisport or endurance racing to get involved and it adds a great social element to the event.”
Registration for the 2026 Balor Multisport Race is now open and athletes are encouraged to sign up early. For more information, registration details or sponsorship opportunities, visit www.multisportireland.ie or email info@multisportireland.ie.
