Tesco Ireland provide food packs to 11 Donegal schools

By Rebecca Crockett

FREE food packs have been distributed to 11 DEIS schools in Donegal by Tesco Ireland’s Stronger Starts Food Programme.

Tesco Ireland doubled the reach of the Stronger Starts Food programme earlier in the year. The department now provides free fresh food packs to 240 DEIS primary schools and 5,400 children throughout Ireland.

The packs include a selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables like fresh apples, onions, potatoes, and carrots.

Communications Director at Tesco Ireland said: “With Stronger Starts Food, our aim is to help make a positive change within our communities. Every child deserves the chance to thrive and have access to fresh, nutritious food.

‘With children returning to primary schools, we’re delighted to now be back providing free, fresh food packs to 240 DEIS primary schools and 5,400 children throughout Ireland, helping children and their families to make and create meals at home.”

The Stronger Starts Food began as a way to support families who needed additional support at home during the pandemic. The programme was then piloted in 2021 by providing 1000 food parcels per week to 40 DEIS schools.

Since then the scheme has grown in an effort to provide Irish children with healthy nutritious food every week.
