TERMON ladies embark on their Ulster Championship quest this Sunday when they head for Cavan and a game against Cavan queens Lacken (throw-in 2pm).
Trevor Alcorn’s girls, fresh from their 4-11 to 2-3 pummelling of St Eunan’s in the Donegal final last month, have made no secret of their desire for provincial glory – and step one on the Ulster ladder comes on Sunday.
Two of Termon’s aces are flying in specially for the game. Donegal senior ladies captain Roisin McCafferty has recently begun a physiotheraphy course in Coventry, England, but the influential midfielder will be back for Sunday’s game, offering the Burn Road brigade a big boost.
Niamh Friel comes from a little further afield. Termon’s full-back, who has been a collosus at number 3 this season, is studying European Law in Brussles, but that doesn’t deter her from taking part. Friel is set to jet back to Ireland today in time to line out against a Cavan side that contains three players from Cavan’s All-Ireland Intermediate Championship winning team from last weekend.
Friel was one of the stars of Termon’s win over Eunan’s in the county final.
Termon will again look to Geraldine McLaughlin who has been red hot of late, scoring a deadly 3-3 against Eunan’s in the Donegal final. On form, McLaughlin is almost unmarkable and will again carry the bulk of the threat. The returning Friel, as well as Niamh McLaughlin, Maureen O’Donnell and the McCaffertys are among the other stars of the show.
O’Donnell, Olive McCafferty and Therese McCafferty had been slight injury doubts in recent weeks but Alcorn will be able to select from a full panel for Sunday’s game, aside from cruciate victim Dara Kelly.
The midfielder sustained a knee injury in the All-Ireland Gaeltact final in Waterford back in June and scans at the Sports Surgery Clinic in Santry confirmed the worst fears. “It’s heartbreaking to be out for a year with a cruciate injury,” she said.
Manager Alcorn says his side has been targeting this game for some time.
“We’ve been planning for this for a while,” he said. “We’ve been saying that we wanted a run in Ulster, but we’ll take it one game at a time from here and we know Lacken are a strong, physical side who are well drilled and we’ll be on guard.

Termon are one of three Donegal sides in Ulster action this weekend. Also at 2pm on Sunday, Milford host Mayobridge in the Intermediate grade while Gaoth Dobhair are away to Aghyaran on Saturday at 2pm.
