Team of the Senior Championship

1. Padraig Mac Giolla Bhríde

(Gaoth Dobhair)

Mac Giolla Bhríde is a highly-rated young goalkeeper who had a good campaign for his club.

He kept three clean sheets and his kick-outs worked well, while he had no trouble coming up the field to join in with attacks.

2. Ultan Doherty

(Naomh Conaill)

Naomh Conaill have no shortage of backs that like to go forward but every successful team needs a stopper and they have that in Ultan Doherty.

The Fintown man returned from an ACL injury and had some excellent marking displays on Daire McDaid (Termon), Conor McCahill (Four Masters) and Eoin de Burca (Gaoth Dobhair).

3. Gary McFadden

(Gaoth Dobhair)

McFadden is a vital cog in the Gaoth Dobhair machine and was the best full-back in this season’s championship.

He had some fine games on dangermen such as Oisin Gallen (Sean MacCumhaills), Patrick McBrearty (Kilcar) and Carlos O’Reilly (St Michael’s) and was one of his club’s best performers in the final.

4. Max Campbell

(Naomh Conaill)

It’s traditionally difficult for young players to break into the Naomh Conaill team but 18-year-old Campbell made a phenomenal impact.

His energy and athleticism added to Naomh Conaill’s threat, while he was solid defensively, and his goals against Termon and Gaoth Dobhair will be remembered for a long time around Glenties.

5. Ethan Harkin

(Gaoth Dobhair)

Gaoth Dobhair switched it up this season a bit by moving Harkin to the half-back line and giving him licence to attack and it worked well as he was man-of-the-match in four of their first five games. He was closely marshalled in the semi-final and decider but did carry the fight late on against Naomh Conaill.

6. Finnbarr Roarty

(Naomh Conaill)

The beating heart of the Naomh Conaill side. His boundless energy and enthusiasm was massive for his team throughout the championship. The 19-year-old scored the winner against Four Masters and then landed three points in a man-of-the-match display in the final.

7. Ricky Gallagher

(Termon)

Gallagher had a terrific championship and was man of the match in Termon’s victories over Four Masters and St Eunan’s. He also did as well as anyone when marking Michael Langan and battled hard in the quarter-final defeat to Naomh Conaill.

8. Kieran Gallagher

(Naomh Conaill)

With Ciaran Thompson absent from midfield through injury, Kieran Gallagher really stepped up and was a colossus. He brought real presence to the aerial exchanges and also popped up with scores at vital times throughout the campaign.

9. Michael Langan

(St Michael’s)

Langan missed St Michael’s opener but he was outstanding when he returned to the team. His displays against Glenfin and Sean MacCumhaills were terrific and he showed good leadership for his team. Arguably the best footballer in Donegal at present.

10. Kevin Muldoon

(Four Masters)

Muldoon has made huge progress over the last 12 months since he started concentrating on Gaelic Games and he had an awesome championship with Four Masters. He had two man-of-the-match performances and also impressed against Glenswilly while he caused Naomh Conaill plenty of problems in the semi-final.

11. Turlough Carr

(Four Masters)

Carr may have been playing adult football for the first time this season but it was noteworthy just how much of Four Masters’ play went through their centre half-forward. He scored 1-2 against Glenswilly and then dictated affairs against Dungloe and Naomh Conaill. The Donegal U20 star has a bright future ahead of him.

12. Mícheál Roarty

(Gaoth Dobhair)

Gaoth Dobhair’s Mr Consistency scored at least two points in every match he played.

There were important scores against MacCumhaills and St Michael’s, while he was often asked to track some of the opposition’s most dangerous players out the field as well.

13. Daniel McLaughlin

(St Michael’s)

McLaughlin may be in his mid-thirties now but he remains a real force in Donegal football and his speed and energy shows no signs of slowing down.

He’s always gets close attention from the opposition but continues to score heavily.

And even in defeat against Gaoth Dobhair in the last-four, he gave it his all.

14. Johnny McGroddy

(Downings)

The second top scorer in the Championship behind Ethan Harkin, Johnny McGroddy was excellent for Downings, and showed real leadership for his team. He scored 1-31 across five matches and stood out against Dungloe, Sean MacCumhaills and most notably in the fine win over Kilcar in Towney.

15. Shea Malone

(Naomh Conaill)

Malone was best known for his involvement with Sligo Rovers before throwing his lot in with Naomh Conaill a couple of months ago.

And what a difference he made in the knock-out stages, especially when Eoghan McGettigan picked up an injury.

Malone contributed vital scores in wins over Killybegs, Termon, Four Masters and Naomh Conaill.
