Team investigating gynae services to visit LUH

THE review team carrying out an investigation into gynaecology services at Letterkenny University Hospital will visit the hospital mid-January, the Donegal News can reveal. Following a request for an update on the review health care group Saolta has now released information on the identity of those who will be carrying out the investigation which will look at the quality and safety of gynaecological clinical services at the hospital.

The members of the Review Team are Mr John Price, Consultant Obstetrician; Ms Anne Kelly (Retired Director of Nursing / Midwifery); and Mr Gareth Clifford, QPS Office, Acute Hospitals.

The HSE agreed to the review following a two-and-a-half year campaign by Bristol-based consultant Dr Margaret MacMahon whose sister Carol passed away from cancer of the womb (uterus), a treatable condition that was missed by LUH because no tissue samples were taken.  A second family came forward in September, 2019 with Convoy woman Edel Peoples raising serious concerns about safety at the hospital following her late mother’s delayed diagnosis of uterine cancer.

It will also make recommendations if necessary to improve the status of quality and safety of Gynaecological Clinical Services in Letterkenny University Hospital. The Review Team are planning to visit Letterkenny University Hospital in mid-January to meet with relevant people.”
