Taoiseach pays tribute following death of journalist, Paddy Clancy

THE Taoiseach has led the tributes to Paddy Clancy, the journalist and broadcaster whose death has been met with deep sadness by family, friends and former colleagues.

A native of Sligo, Paddy, who was 82, lived in Ballyshannon and had long made Donegal his home.

A former journalist with the Sligo Champion and also the Donegal People’s Press, he might best be remembered for his time presenting ‘It Says in the Papers’ on RTÉ Radio 1, a slot he made his own for over three decades.

In a social media post, An Taoiseach Micheál Martin said Mr Clancy was “an enormous presence in Irish journalism for over six decades”.

“His distinctive take on RTÉ’s morning paper round up was essential listening,” he said.

“His reporting and columns were essential reading for many years in the Sligo Champion, Donegal People’s Press, Irish Sun and Mirror.”

After finishing up with ‘It Says in the Papers’, Paddy continued to report on a freelance basis here in Donegal.

Local journalist Eamonn McFadden has also offered words of tribute

“A huge figure in local and national journalism and a great mentor to many of us when we were starting out in media

“His journalism was great and the craic would be better. You could get a tip for a story or a horse just as handy in between court proceedings.
