Tanya Roberts Browne named chair of GAA working group

Tanya Roberts Browne has been named as the new Chairperson of the GAA Wheelchair Hurling/ Camogie working group.

Roberts Browne, of the Na Dúnaibh club, was announced as the chair by the GAA on Monday and will lead a working group of five, while Cork native Sinead Crowley was named chairperson of the GAA Equity, Diversity and Inclusion working group.

Tanya has been chairperson of Bord na nÓg and PRO of her local club Na Dunaibh, demonstrating exceptional leadership skills, strategic vision, and a deep understanding of the issues pertinent to our organisation’s objectives.

Geraldine McTavish, GAA Diversity and Inclusion Manager said: “We are delighted to have both Sinead and Tanya assume the roles.

“Their leadership will undoubtedly steer the working groups towards accomplishing our strategic objectives and advancing our mission to increase awareness of the GAA wheelchair Hurling/ Camogie sport, football for all sport and the wide brief of the Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.

“Their passion for excellence and commitment to driving positive change will be invaluable assets as we work together to address the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Wheelchair Hurling and Camogie is an inclusive activity involving a team 6 a side which is suitable for all ages, genders, and abilities. The game encompasses a range of fundamental skills that exist in Gaelic Hurling and Camogie. The rules have been modified to adapt these skills to suit the individuals involved and their capabilities. It aims to enable individuals to grow and maintain optimum participation across the full diversity of Irish community life.

The game itself comprises of some subtle differences to the traditional game – there are 6 players on each side, with each squad usually containing around 12 or 13 members, and the scoring allows for ground hurling and goals only. Squads are made up of a mix of male and female players.
