Talented Letterkenny girl becomes RTE ‘DJ for a day’

A TALENTED Letterkenny girl who became an RTE DJ for a day is hoping to follow in her daddy’s musical footsteps.

Mia McBride (10) is a fourth class pupil at Lurgybrack National School, lives in Letterkenny and is the daughter of Lorraine and Brian (Biddy).

With a passion for all sorts of music, Mia recently showcased her talents when she took part in RTE’s ‘DJ For A Day’.

For the show, Mia had to select her favourite songs and record the script from home. The show was played on RTÉjr Radio and is available on RTE player.

Speaking to the Donegal News, Mia said she was inspired to take part in the show because she has always wanted to be DJ, just like her daddy.

“I have always wanted to be a DJ like my daddy.

“He plays records but I cannot do that yet but he is going to teach me.

“My daddy DJs as his hobby mainly but he is really good and he has played in Letterkenny, Belfast, Dublin and Scotland.

“I would love to be a DJ and be famous but I don’t think I would really like the paparazzi.

“The show was pretty easy to do as I just recorded it from home.

“I chose the music and did all the intros myself.

“I had to record them all separately and then RTE put it all together,” said Mia.

Mia is no stranger to microphone as she loves music, drawing, drama and is also learning to play the piano.

She is a member of An Grianan Youth Theatre while she also done a Podcast for Kidcast which was featured on RTE Junior.

She said, “I was the game show host. I recorded that from home too.

“The producer Céire O’Donoghue contacted my mum to tell her about DJ for a Day as the producer was looking for kids to take part in the show,” said Mia.

Mia comes from a musical home where she enjoys all kinds of music and her parents are very proud that she has such diverse taste.

During the show she showed off wide taste as she played everything from Katy Perry and Pink to Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes.

However, she said her favourite genre is hip hop and soul.

“I also love Meghan Trainor, Lizzo, Ed Sheerin, Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus.

“I also love Sigrid and my parents surprised me with a trip to the 3Arena to see her last year.

“It was my first real concert.

“I also love hip hop dancing, singing and I am also learning the piano.

“I just passed my first exam,” said Mia.

With dreams of music and drama in her future, Mia recently did her first audition for an independent movie and is waiting patiently on the decision.

“I go to An Grianan Youth Theatre so that’s how I heard about it.

“My parents did not really want me to do it but I love acting and drama and I really wanted to do it.

“I auditioned for the main part as they were looking for a 10 year old girl so I auditioned and met with the writer and director.

“It was my first audition and it went really well.

“I don’ really mind if I don’t get it but it would be nice to be an extra even,” said Mia.
