Swimming success for St. Eunan’s College and Loreto Convent

St. Eunan’s achieved notable success in Ballymena taking 3rd overall in Ulster Schools Swimming in the intermediate Age group earlier this week.

The winners were Belfast Institute, then Coleraine Ins followed by St. Eunan’s College who fought off strong opposition from Belfast Royal Academy and Campbell College to take 3rd overall.

Third year student Leon Vaughan won a great race in the Final of 50 metre back stroke beating Michael Evans( Coleraine Ins) in a close finish in a great time of 30.47 secs.

Matthew Curran (4th year and captain) also reached the final of the breaststroke and secured points finishing 4th overall and finished 7th in the freestyle in a time of 26.81 secs.

The relays also were also great races as Leon and Matthew were joined by Caolan Vaughan and Oliver Lee and secured Bronze medals in both Medley and freestyle relays.

Sean Menamin also swam well in the 50 metres backstroke.

In the Junior section: St. Eunan’s had strong performances from Brian Diver, Johnathan Martin especially in the freestyle all finishing in the top 20 places.

Emma Vaughan (Loreto Convent, Letterkenny) swam a great Final in the Final of the 50 mteres breaststroke and won the silver medal, later Emma secured a bronze medal in the 100 metres Medley in a time of 1 min 14 secs.

There were also great performances from Emma Harvey who swam very well in the freestyle 50 metres and was unlucky not to reach the Final finishing in 7th place.

Ellen Doherty also competed very well in the 50 m. breaststroke 38.2 secs.

In Junior events there were good swims from Chloe Tinney, Alison Dowling, Hannah Mc Menamin, Emma Tinney and Meave Rafferty.

The swimming co coordinators Edward Harvey and Deirdre Duffy of both schools were delighted with the success and also the personal involvement of Richard Vaughan of the Swilly Seals Swimming Club who put in a great effort in training the swimmers and accompanying the schools to Ballymena.
