Swimmers prepare for New Year’s Day events across county

SWIMMERS are preparing to brave the wild Atlantic waves for New Year’s Day events along the coast of Donegal in aid of local charities and causes.

In Gaoth Dobhair, swimmers are set to meet at Bunaninver Pier at 11am on New Year’s Day in an event organised by local hotel Teac Jack, all proceeds will be donated to those affected by the tragedy in Creeslough.

Those set to take a chilly plunge in the Swilly will meet at Rathmullan Beach at 12pm. Tthere will be a bucket collection on the day, all funds raised will also be donated to the Creeslough Community Fund.

The Doe Amateur Swimming Club are to host their 45th Annual New Year’s charity swim at Marble Hill Beach Dunfanaghy at 2pm, in aid of those affected by the tragedy in their local village.

In Keadue the annual New Year’s Day plunge starts at 1pm at the the Keadue Blockyard Beach. The event is in aid of Gemma’s Legacy of Hope.

This is a really important service to the local community which offers counselling and play therapy.

The service costs €70,000 annually to run and to date has engaged and supported over 300 people in the community to date.

In Fanad the annual swim will start at 2pm at Ballyhiernan Bay, here the funds raised will go towards both the Fanad Day Centre and the South African Missions.

The mission is very close to the hearts of the people of Fanad, as Sister Margaret Sweeney who is from the area spent over 30 years working as a Salesian Sister as part of the Don Bosco Educational Project caring for children in South Africa.

The annual New Year’s Day Swim will also make a welcomed return to Narin Strand at 3pm.

The event organised by the Downstrands Family Resource centre will support the Downstrands Family Counselling Service and the Rosbeg and Downstrands Care of the Aged.
