THE scale of a fresh funding crisis facing Donegal County Council will begin to emerge later today (Monday).
The council’s most powerful committee known as the Corporate Policy Group, which includes heads of the political parties and top officials, is meeting in Lifford amid fears that funding is to be slashed further for frontline services and infrastructure developments in areas such as roads, housing, water and sewerage treatment facilities.
On Friday morning the council confirmed it had received notification from the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government in relation to a “proposed adjustment” to
the vital Local Government Fund for 2012.
This quickly drew a sharp rebuke from local TD’s with Sinn Féin describing the Minister for Environment, Mr Phil Hogan’s decision to withhold millions of euros from councils across the country as “bully-boy tactics”.
They claim Minister Hogan is now going to base funding cuts from the Local Government Fund in line with the collection of the household charge collection rates.
