Action finally got underway in the heat of Tbilisi, Georgia for the three Finn Valley athletes competing in the European Youth Olympics yesterday.
Early on what was to become a super Tuesday Sommer Lecky, after a shaky start a lower heights, got a clearance of 1.72 which saw her through to the final. Sommer has had an excellent season to date and can gain much needed confidence for later in the week when the medals are on offer.
In the afternoon session, Letterkenny’s Arlene Crossan with a leap of 5.73 ensured qualification for her final. Last up was Aaron McGlynn from Glenfin in the 800 qualifying which was based on automatic top two plus two fastest losers from three heats. Running in heat 2, Aaron covered all angles with a comfortable second in 1.57.77.
The athletes have been joined in Georgia by family coaches and friends and it is indeed a tremendous development experience for each of these young talented athletes.
