A DONEGAL woman returned home from the World Transplant Games South Africa this week proudly wearing two medals around her neck.
Vienna White from Letterkenny won silver in the 3km Race Walk and bronze in the Shot Put at the 19th games which were held in Durban.
The 24 brave athletes arrived home on Tuesday and were greeted with a rapturous welcome from family, friends and supporters when they came through the Arrivals Hall at Dublin Airport’s Terminal Two proudly displaying their medals.
The Irish team, ranging in age from 12 to 68, were placed 14th overall on the medals table at the games which involved participation by almost 1000 organ transplant recipients from 50 countries. The final Irish tally was 12 Gold, 10 Silver and 12 Bronze.
The Irish Kidney Association is responsible for managing Transplant Team Ireland’s participation at the Games. The Irish Team can now look forward to competing in the next World Transplant Games which will be held in 2015 in Mar del Plata in Argentina.
Next year they will take part in the biennial European Transplant & Dialysis Games which will be held in Krakow, Poland.
