A MICA protest due to take place in Letterkenny tomorrow has been cancelled and replaced by a ‘mica student stance’ demonstration at Loreto, Letterkenny.
No Place Like Home YSI had planned a protest to be held at 2pm in the Market Square, Letterkenny.
However, this event has been cancelled and replaced by a smaller ‘mica student stance’ demonstration solely for Loreto students on the school premises in Letterkenny.
All students and staff of Loreto Letterkenny are invited while members of the NoPlaceLikeHome YSI team and leading campaigner Paddy Diver will be attending and making speeches.
Speaking to the Donegal News, a spokesperson for the group said: “The event aims to raise awareness of students who are affected by mica and to show our support.
“Obviously times are quite different to the last few years but we feel this event still has the potential to make an impact.
“We want our friends and others our age to know that they are not alone.
“We are very active on our social media accounts, we will share images and details post-event
“We ask everyone to support us and those affected by following our social media accounts @noplacelikehomeys.”
The NoPlaceLike Home group was formed by a team of Letterkenny Transition Year students who aim to campaign for recognition of the suffering of mica affected families and fully support the call for 100 per cent redress.
Last year, the group carried out a survey and found that majority of students within their school community had been affected to some extent by mica.
The spokesperson continued, “The No Place Like Home campaign is trying to gain more recognition for young people who are impacted by mica, including students who are living in mica homes.
“Our survey found that there is a lot of people in our school and communities who are impacted by the ongoing crisis and it is an added stress to students and their families.”
