In and around Letterkenny’s polling stations has been a hive of activity so far, with staff and election campaign supporters revealing a strong turnout.
A total of 132,000 voters are eligible to vote right across the county until 10pm tonight, after polling stations opened at 7am this morning.
The local elections will elect 37 members representing seven Local Electoral Areas on Donegal County Council.
As well as voting in the local elections, Donegal people are today also casting their votes in the European elections to elect four MEPs in the Midlands/North-West Constituency for the European Parliament. Voters today are also being given the opportunity to vote yes or no on the amendment to the Divorce Bill.
There has been a strong turnout so far today in and around Letterkenny as early voters took to their respective polling stations.
At St Patrick’s National School in Lurgybrack, the turnout was 13.3 per cent just after 1pm. Polling station staff there reported a very busy morning, and anticipated a very busy afternoon and evening.
It was a similar picture over in Ballyraine National School were turnout at the centre was 16 per cent around 2pm. Polling station staff and election candidate supporters told the Donegal News there was a “great atmosphere” this morning, and a “really positive turnout”, across the board.
There was a very steady stream of voters to Trinity Hall just after 2pm today. People there were queued for a time while filing into their prospective booth to cast their vote.
