LETTERKENNY 24/7 athlete Aidan Callaghan finished 383 out of 2,000 competitors at the Kona Ironman competition.
The pinnacle of long distance triathlons, the World championship held every October in Hawaii, allows 2,000 athletes embarked on a 140.6-mile journey that presents the ultimate test of body, mind and spirit.
The event combines three hugely tough endurance races in Hawaii— a 2.4-mile roughwater Swim, 112 miles on the bike and then the 26.2-mile marathon—into one event and Aidan finished in 9:54.06.
The event was won by leading German professional triathlete Jan Frodeno in 8 Hours, six minutes and 30 seconds, just over three and a half minutes ahead of fellow German Sebastian Kienle.
The Ironman World Championship has been held annually in Hawaii since 1978, with an additional race in 1982. It is owned and organized by the World Triathlon Corporation. It is the annual culmination of a series of Ironman triathlon qualification races held throughout the world.
Aidan Callaghan in his first year going long finished 20th overall in the Ironman event held in Bolton in a time of 9.53.58 to qualify for Kona.
