Stranorlar to host charity swim in aid of Crumlin hospital

Swimming

A SWIMMING challenge in aid of Our Lady’s Childrens’ Hospital Medical and Research Foundation of Crumlin is taking place in Stranorlar tomorrow, Saturday, May 30.

The challenge being undertaken is to swim the distance from the Finn Valley Leisure Centre to Crumlin Hospital in Dublin.

Participants are collectively attempting to reach the target of 8600 lengths of the pool. This equates to a distance of 215km. People can pledge to swim any number of lengths on the day.We will have a whiteboard on poolside with a countdown of the remaining lengths.

The challenge is open to any age and the customer will inform the event personnel how much they have swam once they are finished.

The idea came from local Crumlin Research Foundation fundraiser Niall Mulrine approached Martin McDevitt, Pool Operations Manager of Finn Valley Leisure Centre on how to raise funds for Crumlin Research Foundation. Martin’s idea on the swim to Crumlin in lengths of the pool came from a project they worked on before swimming the length of nearby river Finn.

The money raised will go directly to the Children’s Medical and Research Foundation of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital of Crumlin.

With the huge task of improving Crumlin still ongoing, there’s good news, and some very worrying news too. New children’s heart

The good news is that the recently renovated Children’s Heart Centre is now benefitting hundreds of children and their families. With 25 spacious new bedrooms, two isolation rooms, a kitchen, howers, toilets, and a tea-room for parents. This state of the art unit is the kind of facility that our young patients, and our highly trained and qualified team of cardiac doctors and nurses fully deserve.

The really worrying news is that Crumlin are now a full €1 million short of the funds needed to upgrade the Outpatients Dept. The situation is desperate. Outpatients was built almost 60 years ago to cater for 500 children a week. Today, there are 1500 going through per week.

With everyone helping to fund-raise, the heart centre can become the state of excellence our local and national children need.
It be great to see all people from abilities and ages to come on the day to support this cause. Ring 074-9132053 for more info and sponsor cards.
