THE pupils and staff members at Stramore National School returned to a special homecoming celebration on Saturday evening – rounding off a once-in-a-lifetime trip that will live long in their memories.
The school represented Ireland at the VEX Robotics World Championships which were held in Texas last week.
The young pupils were joined by their parents and school staff at the Dallas competition where they did themselves proud in an extremely competitive event.
The group attended the spectacular opening ceremony last Tuesday before a marathon couple of days of competing got underway on Wednesday.
The Irish team got through the first round, before finishing ninth – a wonderful achievement given the level of competition.
Among the traveling party was Stramore NS school principal Conchubhar Fríl who said the trip to Dallas was a wonderful experience for everyone involved.
“We got home on Saturday and there was a homecoming event organised at Wilkin’s Bar especially for the group. It was a lovely gesture,” he said.
“It was a fantastic event to be part of and we’re all so proud of everyone who represented our school so well.”
Mr Fríl added a special word of thanks to the community of Termon and Gartan for all their support in the lead-up to the event. Fundraising events were organised – including a Vintage Car and Tractor Run and a Breakfast morning – and both were extremely well supported.
He also thanked staff members Pól O Fearraí and Francie Friel for their help and assistance. Both were presented with special hoodies and cowboy hats by the pupils as a thank you.
The principal also acknowledged the support received from LPT Thuaisceart Dhún na nGall and Patrick Gallagher Travel who supplied transport to and from Dublin for the traveling group.
