GARDAí have made a fresh appeal to car owners after the theft of a car in Letterkenny which was later found abandoned with damage caused to the ignition barrel.
On Sunday, June 25 at 2.50am, gardaí in Letterkenny were alerted to the fact that a car appeared to have been abandoned at College Park, Letterkenny. Gardaí located the car in question, a silver Honda Jazz, partial registration ’05 D’ in the middle of the street within the estate. The boot was open and there was obvious damage caused to the ignition barrel.
The owner who lived in the same estate was contacted. The keys were still in their possession and the car had been stolen as they slept.
A garda spokesperson said: “We appeal to anybody who may have seen this car being driven within the College Park area that morning to make contact with Gardaí in Letterkenny on (074) 9167100.”
Earlier this year, statistics from An Garda Síochána showed a growth in car thefts, particularly Japanese imported vehicles within Letterkenny.
Gardaí said this is driven by the theft of second-hand imported cars from outside Europe, and may be due to the lack of security features in the most commonly stolen imported vehicles.
