STEPHEN McLaughlin was on target for Nottingham Forest’s Under-21s earlier today in their 2-1 defeat by Birmingham City at Wast Hills.

The 23-year old Clonmany man – signed by Forest last January – netted a first-half equaliser for Forest.

This was McLaughlin’s fifth game in a row since his return from a loan spell at Bristol City. He has been in good form for Charlie McParland’s Under-21s and is bidding to catch the eye of first-team manager Billy Davies.

Birmingham went ahead in the third minute when Sam Deadfield slammed the ball high into the roof of the net.

However, McLaughlin equalised midway through the half. The former Finn Harps and Derry City player dispossessed a Birmingham defender before sending a bullet into the bottom corner past the despairing dive of Connal Trueman.

The half-time interval came at the worst possible moment for The Reds and the home side soon stepped up their efforts to regain their lead – which they duly did when Scott Allan netted the match winner in the 55th minute.
