Two legendary figures in Irish rugby, Nora Stapleton and Nigel Carr, are set to be formally inducted into the prestigious Rugby Writers of Ireland Hall of Fame.
Their outstanding contributions to the sport, both on and off the pitch, will be celebrated at the annual awards, taking place next week at the renowned Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. The event will bring together leading figures from across the Irish rugby landscape to honour their remarkable achievements and legacies.
Fahan’s Nora Stapleton, a highly influential out-half, earned 50 caps for Ireland between 2010 and 2017. She played a pivotal role in some of the national team’s most significant triumphs. An architect on the pitch, she was instrumental in Ireland’s historic 2013 Women’s Six Nations Grand Slam and 2015 Championship title. Stapleton also represented her country at three Women’s Rugby World Cups, most notably playing a key role in the memorable victory over New Zealand at the 2014 tournament. Her impact continued off the field following her retirement, as she has dedicated herself to further developing the sport, serving as the IRFU’s Women’s Rugby Development Manager. Stapleton now sits as the Women in Sport Lead for Sport Ireland.
Nigel Carr left an indelible mark on the international stage, earning 11 caps for Ireland between 1985 and 1987. Carr was a key figure in the Ireland team that famously secured the Triple Crown in the 1985 Five Nations Championship. He was widely regarded as one of the world’s best openside flankers of his era, earning selection for the British and Irish Lions and representing the Barbarians. His transformative influence was felt across club and provincial rugby, most notably with Ulster. Following his playing career, Carr has continued to contribute significantly to the sport and community as a selector, broadcaster and through charity volunteer work. Nigel was recognised with an MBE in 2021.
Speaking ahead of the event, John Fallon, Chairperson of the Rugby Writers of Ireland, said: “Nora Stapleton and Nigel Carr represent the very best of Irish rugby. Their contributions have left a lasting legacy, and it is a privilege for the Rugby Writers of Ireland to honour them during this truly momentous evening.”
Next week’s awards ceremony will also shine a light on the outstanding achievements of the past season. Individual honours include the Women’s and Men’s Players of the Year for both 7s and 15s, with further accolades for the Team of the Year, Club of the Year and the Tom Rooney Award for outstanding contribution to rugby. Furthermore, the esteemed Fred Cogley Award will be presented to Frank Quinn and John D. O’Brien, recognising their significant impact and dedicated service within rugby media.
