THOUSANDS of people across the county will turn out to support their local St Patrick’s Day parade today. Committees have been busy organising the festivities over the last few months and there is events planned right across the county.
LETTERKENNY
This year the Letterkenny St Patrick’s Day parade will celebrate Celtic Culture in anticipation of the Pan Celtic Festival which will be held in the town in April. The parade this year will start at the earlier time of 2pm so that rugby fans can catch the Six Nations game between Ireland and England which kicks off at 2.45pm.
DUNGLOE
Dungloe is celebrating 130 years of St Patrick’s Day parades in the town this year. The festivities will get underway at 3pm with marching bands, floats, traditional music, Disney characters and of course St Patrick himself.
BURTONPORT
The St Patrick’s Day celebrations will take place in St Columba’s Community Centre commencing after 11am mass. This event has been a huge success since it began over 10 years ago.
CREESLOUGH
The parade will take place after the 11am mass at St Michael’s Church, Creeslough (weather permitting).
DUNFANAGHY
The fancy dress parade is leaving Moore’s Garage at 1.30pm sharp.
MILFORD
There will be a St Patrick’s Day social event after mass in Milford Hall today from 12pm to 1pm. The event is in aid of the youth of the parish who are travelling to Lourdes and Medjugorje. There will be traditional music, dance and refreshments will be served as well as a raffle.
TWIN TOWNS
The Twin Towns St Patrick’s Day parade will take place at the earlier time this year of 1pm starting in Stranorlar.
MEVAGH
The theme of this year’s parade in Mevagh is ‘Paddy in a Pram’ and it will get underway at 1pm. There will be entertainment on the street from 12.15pm with DJ John Bosco and Devlinreagh School band. There will be traffic diversions in place around Carrigart from 12.15pm.
ARDARA
The Ardara parade is on Sunday and begins at 3.30pm from the Church car park. A large number of bands will be in attendance and those participating are asked to be there before 3pm.
GAOTH DOBHAIR
The St Patrick’s Day Parade will start at Bunbeg crossroads at 2.30pm and proceed to Molloy’s Supermarket in Derrybeg. Motorists should refrain from using the main Derrybeg to Bunbeg road while the parade is in progress.
GLENTIES
Unfortunately the proposed St Patrick’s Day Midnight parade in Glenties has been cancelled. The decision was made earlier this week due to the unavailability of marching bands. The organisers said it was a very hard decision given the success of last year’s event.
