THE nature of championship football means that the hard work and commitment of an entire season can be undone in the space of sixty minutes.
For St Michael’s, it didn’t even take that long in their Donegal SFC semi-final with Kilcar last year.
Michael Kelly’s side appeared to be making steady progress throughout the year, and qualified for the quarter-finals with minimum fuss.
They struggled through their last-eight encounter with Burt, but still, as they travelled to Ballybofey on a Saturday night last September, they couldn’t have envisaged the trouncing they would receive at the hands of eventual champions, Kilcar.
Kelly’s side were blown away by the Towney men, who established a 12-point lead by the interval, and cantered home to win by 2-16 to 0-7.
It was a tough defeat to stomach for St Michael’s, as they know they didn’t do themselves justice.
Time has healed their wounds, and they are starting afresh in 2018, and ready to give it their all once again.
“Obviously there was a lot of disappointment at the time,” said Kelly.
“We didn’t perform on the day. It took a wee while to get over it.
“But the months pass by, and a new season comes around, and you’re ready to go again no problem.”
