A SAINT Johnston student has been awarded the 2015 John Thompson Memorial Scholarship by Dublin City University (DCU) in recognition of her academic achievements.
Digital Marketing student, Claire Petersen, received one of the 15 scholarships awarded at a ceremony in DCU last week in honour of past students, graduates and leading figures in Irish public life to current students.
This prestigious marketing and media scholarship fund was established in 2008 by friends and family of the late John Thompson to honour the memory of a giant of the Irish newspaper business.
Mr Thompson’s career in the newspaper and magazine business spanned almost 40 years, in which time John was instrumental in launching titles such as the Irish Daily Star, The Sunday World, Ireland on Sunday and the Irish Daily Mail.
The Marketing and Media Scholarship aims to encourage connections between communications and marketing. This approach reflects a deeply held belief of Johns that great journalism and great media organisations are co-dependent.
The Memorial Scholarship ceremony is an annual event in the University’s calendar and is attended by university supporters who have chosen to remember family, friends and colleagues in an impactful way, by contributing to the education of current students enrolled in the University’s Access Scholarship programme, Sports Scholarship programme and postgraduate courses.
Speaking about the awards, Mr. Larry Quinn, Chairman of the Educational Trust Board commented, “Contributing to a student’s education and having an impact on their lives in this way is a special way to remember loved ones. These young men and women are a tribute to those we remember today and will meet the challenge of living up to the name and ideals associated with each scholarship award.”
