St Eunan’s College manager Gary McDaid says the pain of defeat in last year’s Corn Colmcille Final is motivating his team to go one better this term and win the Loch an Iúir Cup.

Last year, when the side were just first years, they lost out by a goal to St Columb’s in the final.

It was a tough defeat to stomach, but they have come back stronger for the experience.

McDaid’s side saw off St Malachy’s Castlewellan on Wednesday, and will now meet either Patrician High School. Carrickmacross, or Holy Trinity Cookstown in next week’s final.

“These boys were beaten in the Corn Colmcille Final last year, and it’s something we have talked about to go one better this year,” said McDaid.

“It’s been playing on the back of the minds since, and they didn’t want to leave it behind themselves today.

“Castlewellan had been averaging 9-14 a game, so we knew it was going to be a huge challenge to hold them, and we did very well.

“Other than the goal they got, our ‘keeper didn’t have another save to make, and they didn’t really open us up other than that, and we’re very happy with the way they performed.”
