St. Eunan’s Cathedral in Letterkenny will close for five weeks later this year to allow for major refurbishment works.
A major painting project is planned for the cathedral and while the work is being carried out, some Masses and ceremonies will be held in the Church of the Irish Martyrs.
The work will commence on Monday, August 25 and is hoped to be completed by Wednesday, October 1.
Although it is hoped the Cathedral will be functional for weekend Masses, weekday Masses will be held in the Church of the Irish Martyrs.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Monsignor Kevin Gillespie said he is very grateful to the community at the Irish Martyrs for their assistance.
“The Cathedral is being painted which is a huge logistical challenge because of the size of the building and our congregation,” he said.
“We are very grateful to the community at the Irish Martyrs for facilitating us for daily Masses.”
Mass will be held in the Irish Martyrs on Mondays at 8am and 9.30am and from Tuesday to Friday at 8am, 9.30am and 7pm.
All 8am and 7pm weekday Masses will be celebrated by the Cathedral Clergy. The Mass intentions for 8am and 7pm are to be reserved to the Cathedral Parish Community, particularly for First Anniversaries and Month’s Minds.
The Friday 7pm Mass will continue to be a shared Mass.
All Cathedral funerals on weekdays will take place at the Church of the Irish Martyrs, conducted by the Cathedral Clergy.
Baptisms will be celebrated at the Cathedral as usual on Saturdays at 4pm and Sundays at 2.30pm.
