It’s a case of Deja Vu for St Eunan’s and Termon as they meet for the second consecutive week in the Donegal Senior Football Championship.
The two sides faced-off last weekend at the Burn Road where St Eunan’s ran out three-point winners but with the order of where the pair finished in the standings, they’ll go to battle again this Saturday in the preliminary quarter-finals.
Ahead of the clash, Termon manager Caolan McDaid stated that the group are looking forward to the test that lies ahead and are ready to embrace the challenge.
He discussed that the Burn Road men made a number of errors in last weekend’s meeting which they’ll hope to rectify this Saturday.
“We’ve gone out with the message this year that we’re really going to focus on ourselves. We approach every game as if it’s Termon versus Termon. We made a number of mistakes on Saturday night so this week will just be trying to right the wrongs from the previous games and be better the next time we go out.”
“St Eunan’s are probably one of the best club teams in Ulster, nevermind Donegal. It will be a challenge but we have to embrace that challenge too and look forward to it.”
Termon have had a great campaign to date, lifting the Division 1 title but they just avoided the relegation play-offs on score difference.
McDaid expressed that this displays the jump between the Intermediate and Senior competitions and that his group have definitely learned from the experience.
“No doubt, we’ve had a great season. It’s probably just shown the jump from Intermediate to Senior, it’s a big jump in quality, intensity and experience levels. A lot of our boys are still in that 22 to 23 age group so definitely a lot to learn through that group stage.”
“We were lucky but we’re still in the competition and if we can get a result this weekend then it would be massive for the club.”
St Eunan’s forward Eoin McGeehin is anticipating a similar style contest when the pair face-off this Saturday and feels that it will go down to the wire in Convoy.
“It’s a quick turnaround with the way the seedings have worked out that it’s going to be the same again, it’s going to be a ding dong battle which will probably go down to the wire again this Saturday.”
For a second year running, the Letterkenny men just missed out on the top four on score difference.
A route through the preliminary quarter-finals didn’t serve Barry Meehan’s outfit too badly last year but McGeehin insists that the group aren’t looking beyond this weekend’s test, stating that you can’t afford to do that in a Championship as competitive as the one we’ve got here in Donegal.
“It’s been similar to last year with how things worked out, we just missed out on the top four finish which we were going for but things didn’t fall our way.”
“There’s probably pros and cons to it, if you got straight through then you might’ve got extra rest but with that said, we might get more games under our belt and be able to gel more.”
‘We’re in no way at all looking anywhere ahead, you literally can’t afford to do that in Donegal club football. The task this weekend is going to be as hard, if not harder than last weekend and I think we’re aware of that.”
