Music legend Buddy Holly will be brought to life over five nights at the Balor Theatre from this evening (Tuesday), thanks to the pupils of St
Columba’s College in Stranorlar.
Before The Beatles or The Rolling Stones ever played a note, pop music was changed forever by the slightly gangly-looking, spectacle wearing
but immensely talented boy from Lubbock, Texas.
With is band, The Crickets, Holly – real name Charles Hardin Holley – helped create the rock‘n’ roll sound of the 1950s and gave the world a
host of classics that have maintained their popularity even today.
Some of the cast members who will be in fine tune this evening for the St Columba’s College recreation of the Buddy Holly Story.
Peggy Sue, That’ll Be The Day and Oh Boy are just some of the hits that made Buddy Holly and his band superstars on an unprecedented scale
at the time.
Sadly, although in true rock ‘n’ roll style, Holly’s life was cut short when, at the age of just 22, he was killed in a plane crash.
Shortly after 1am am on February 3, 1959, Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP ‘Big Bopper’ Richardson were killed instantly when their plane crashed into a cornfield five miles northwest of Iowa airport.
The tragedy stunned the world and prompted news reels to dub it ‘The Day the Music Died’.
The music however lives on and tonight the students of St Columbas College, Stranorlar, will bring the story of Buddy to life in what is guaranteed to be a toe-tapping, handclapping extravaganza which will have the audience dancing in the aisles.
The Buddy Holly Story runs for five nights until Saturday November 18.
