Speed limits to be slashed in Finn Valley

by Chris Ashmore

A SIGNIFICANT reduction in speed limits in towns and villages throughout the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District Council area is on the cards.

In particular, many roads will see their maximum speed limit slashed from 50kph to 30kph.

It’s all part of seeping reforms in a bid to make our roads safer.

Maximum speed limits on many rural roads will also be reduced, some to 80 kph and some to 60 kph,

Local councillors have been informed that there will now be a public consultation process which will permit members of their public – and councillors – to look at proposals and to make their views known.

Cllr. Patrick McGowan, stressing the importance of getting the public views, expressed concern about continuing issues with speed at a number of locations.

He highlighted issues at Drumboe Avenue, claiming some motorists are “flying on it” and also through Liscooley and Drumkeen Village where there needs “to be proper speed limits”.

Cathaoirleach Cllr. Gary Doherty said that in Liscooley there should not be an argument against flashing light speed signs.

While he welcomed the prospect of many speed limits coming down from 80 kph to 60 kph, Cllr. Martin Harley wondered how effective this would be, and added that he would like to see more roadside cameras.

“That is the only way we will control speeds on the road,” he said.

Cllr. Dakota Nic Mheanman also raised the issue of speed through Drumkeen.

Meanwhile, Cllr.McGowan re-iterated previous calls to look at the need for improvements at McClay’s junction in Stranorlar and also on the need to upgrade the N15 from there to Lifford.

Acknowledging the issues with the N15 from Stranorlar to Lifford, Senior Engineer, Claire McGeever, said the council is proposing to do work in Castlefin.

She noted that the section of road going through Castlefin is “difficult to maintain” and there is a lot of patching and repatching.
