Speed limit reduction sought for outskirts of town

Letterkenny councillor Donal Coyle says the time has come to reduce speed limits in the Golf Course Road/Kiltoy Junction area of the town and install traffic calming measures at this junction and at Tara Court.

He raised his concerns at this week’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

“This is a stretch of road which, over the years, has claimed a number of lives and I think it is time we looked at reducing the speed limits,” he said.

“I had a similar motion before council two years ago. Also the vision lines coming out from Tara Court are very poor,” he added.

Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh seconded the motion saying this issue for this area comes up on a regular basis.

“The one thing we can do is reduce speed limits,” he added.

In response the council executive stated “The assessment of the speed limit on this section of road will be carried out as part of the Speed Limit Review.

“Donegal County Council has slowed down the delivery plan for its Speed Limit Review to ensure that same reconciles with both the new legislation on default speed limits due to be brought in during 2024 and the new DOT guidelines advising on said default speed limits and the application and conditions around the implementation of special speed limits. This may be ready in April 2024.

“The council is currently reviewing all those speed limits already reviewed as part of its own process and assessing the impact of the default speed limits with respect to same.

“There may be a transition period or interim arrangements put in place by the department with respect to speed limit changes, and once clear information is received, the council will provide an update to members and set out the steps to complete the current Speed Limit Review and all that it will entail.”
