Speed limit cut on rural roads branded ‘arbitrary’

A DONEGAL councillor has criticised the Department of Transport’s decision to reduce speed limits on rural local roads from 80km/hr to 60km/hr, calling the move “arbitrary”.

From this Friday onwards, default speed limits on rural local roads around the county and nationally will decrease and new speed limit signs will replace existing ones to reflect the change.

This reduction is part of a government strategy that aims to bring down the number of fatalities and injuries caused by traffic collisions.

While welcoming any measures to enhance road safety in the county, Cllr Jack Murray expressed doubts about what he described as a “blanket reduction”, questioning if other options have been considered.
