Speed enforcement operation continuing until midnight

An Garda Síochána, in partnership with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and other stakeholders, are continuing to carry out a 24-hour nationwide speed enforcement operation today as part of National Slow Down Day this evening.

The initiative, which began at 12:01am this morning will continue until 11:59pm today, aiming to promote safer driving and reduce speed-related collisions nationwide, coinciding with increased road use for Christmas holidays.

During Week 3 of the Christmas Road Safety Campaign, Monday, December 15 to Sunday, December 24, nearly 5,400 drivers were detected across the country for speeding offences by An Garda Síochána, along with Static Safety Cameras and Mobile Safety Camera Vans, by our Road Safety Partners, GoSafe.

One of the notable top speeds detected included 144km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R239 in Fahan.

A garda spokesperson said: “We are appealing to all those who will be taking to the roads over the Christmas period to please slow down, to take extra care and to give your driving your full attention. Do not drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, wear your seatbelt and leave your mobile phone out of reach when driving.

“The last thing we want is to have a reason to call to anyone’s home with devastating news this Christmas or at any time of the year and so we urge all road users to please act responsibly.”
