A SNORING Raphoe man had to be awoken from a deep sleep at the back of Letterkenny District Court yesterday where he was charged with seriously assaulting another man.
Gary Gillen (36) of Guesthouse End Street, Raphoe, was before the Judge Paul Kelly charged with an alleged assault causing harm on Cathal Duffy at 3 Glendale Drive, Letterkenny, on October 26, 2013.
Mr Gillen fell asleep at the back of the court, from where he could be heard snoring loudly while other cases were being heard.
He had to be wakened on a number of occasions by his solicitor, Mr Patsy Gallagher.
When his case was finally called, Gillen shouted “Jesus” when Mr Gallagher woke him again.
Judge Kelly questioned whether or not the defendant was “fit” to attend court.
Inspector David Kelly asked the judge to adjourn the case as he was awaiting a medical report on the injuries sustained by Mr Duffy.
Judge Kelly adjourned the matter to the September 15, sitting of the court.
He also granted Gillen free legal aid on hearing that he was unemployed.
