Smoky coal ban has made Letterkenny cleaner – Council

Smoke Results

THE reduction in air pollution in Letterkenny can be directly attributed to the introduction of the smoky coal ban in the town last year, according to Donegal County Council.

Early results of air pollution monitoring carried out by the HSE’s Environmental Health Service show a significant reduction in the air pollution levels since the introduction of the ban.

“This reduction in black smoke can be directly attributed to the introduction of the smoky coal ban to Letterkenny in May 2013,” a council spokesperson said.

“Donegal County Council would like to thank all those working in the coal retail sector, and householders in the Letterkenny area for complying with the law and choosing smokeless fuels such as smokeless coal, wood, turf or similar compliant products.

“The council will continue to make the public aware of the smoky coal ban and will continue to carry out enforcement activities in this area.”

If you are still unsure as to whether or not you are inside the ban area, please check out the interactive map on the front page of the Council’s website or available at public buildings, such as the Public Service Centre and the library, as well as at main retail outlets.

The council encourages members of the public to report instances of the flouting of the ban, which will result in enforcement action being taken.
