AFTER almost two decades capturing some of the world’s most romantic weddings against the stunning backdrops of Italy, award winning Letterkenny photographer Siobhan Hegarty has returned home to Donegal.
She has brought with her a wealth of international experience, creativity and a unique story that connects the landscapes of Ireland and Italy.
A member of the well known Hegarty family which has run the successful Hegarty’s Ford in Letterkenny for many years, Siobhan’s journey has taken her from her Donegal roots to the heart of Italy, where she built a successful destination wedding photography career across Rome, Tuscany and Umbria.
Now back in Donegal, she is bringing together the passion of her homeland with the inspiration and artistic influence gained from years of living and working in Italy.
With more than 25 years behind the camera, photography has always been about much more than taking pictures for Siobhan. It has been about noticing the moments that often go unseen, the quiet emotions, the small gestures, the laughter, the connections and the details that make every story unique.
Her journey into wedding photography began when she photographed a friend’s wedding in Dublin. From that first experience, Siobhan discovered a natural connection with the energy and emotion of wedding days.
She went on to establish a successful wedding photography business in Donegal before a life changing visit to Italy opened the door to a whole new chapter.
Falling in love with the beauty, culture and slower pace of life in Umbria, Siobhan made the brave decision to begin again in a new country. What followed was an incredible 18 year journey photographing destination weddings throughout Italy, working with couples from across the world and capturing celebrations in some of the country’s most breathtaking locations.
From historic villas and ancient streets to vineyards and rolling countryside, Siobhan’s Italian years allowed her to develop a distinctive style focused on natural storytelling rather than traditional posed photography.
Her approach is centred on capturing genuine emotion and creating images that allow couples to remember not just what their wedding day looked like, but how it truly felt.
Now home in Donegal, Siobhan is excited to reconnect with the county that shaped her while bringing a fresh international perspective to weddings throughout Donegal, Ireland and beyond. Her return represents a beautiful coming together of two places she loves, the rugged beauty and warmth of Donegal and the timeless romance of Italy.
“Photography has always been about telling stories,” says Siobhan. “Every couple has their own journey, and my role is to capture those real moments, emotions and memories that they will treasure forever.”
After more than 20 years of photographing love stories abroad, Siobhan Hegarty’s return home is a celebration of the Irish diaspora experience, leaving home, embracing another culture, building a life abroad and returning with a lifetime of stories to share.
From the Wild Atlantic Way to the heart of Italy and back again, Siobhan’s journey proves that sometimes home is where the story begins and where it eventually returns.
