A DONEGAL Senator is calling on Sinn Féin TDs in the county to be more vocal in their support for the A5 dual carriageway project and to lobby party colleague, Minister Liz Kimmins, ahead of an appeal next month against a recent court decision.
In June, the North’s High Court quashed a decision by the Department of Infrastructure to proceed with the first phase of the A5 project, which has been a long-awaited development for the north west transport network.
Speaking in the Seanad, Senator Niall Blaney emphasised the importance of collective action to ensure the project moves forward.
“I think it is really important that we all work collectively together in relation to this project to ensure we get it right this time,” he said. The Senator criticised Donegal Deputies Pádraig Mac Lochlainn and Pearse Doherty, who he claimed have “been silent” since the court ruling. He added that the Sinn Féin TDs should do everything they can in this instance and urged them to take action to secure the project’s future.
The Senator asked to write to Minister Liz Kimmins, the North’s Infrastructure Minister, to offer her support for the A5. He also asked to write to Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, asking him to work in cooperation to help deliver the project
