ALMOST thirty per cent of crime victims in Donegal failed to report the incident to gardai, a survey has found.
The findings of the survey carried out by Sinn Féin were presented to Garda Chief Superintendent Terri McGinn on Monday and will also be forwarded to the Minster for Justice, Mr Alan Shatter TD
The survey of 500 people in the Donegal North East constituency, finds that 26 per cent of people did not feel safe in their communities, over 33 per cent didn’t feel safe going out at night, while 86 per cent feel there is an urgent need to boost garda resources.
Speaking at the launch of the survey in Gallagher’s Hotel, Letterkenny, on Monday, Sinn Féin’s Justice Spokesman, Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn, confirmed his party would halt the closure of rural garda stations if they were in power and end the recruitment embargo for gardai.
“Over the last few years, we have found an escalation in the levels of crime and anti-social behaviour and it is vital we formulate a proportional law and order response to address the underlying causes,” he said.
