Single in honour of Irish abroad

LETTERKENNY singer Sinead Black released a new single on St Patrick’s Day especially for Irish people abroad who are missing home.
‘A wee sprig of green’ tells the story of a grandfather living abroad who explains to his granddaughter why he is wearing the shamrock and how it brings Ireland to him wherever he is.
After hearing the song it immediately resonated with Sinead because during lockdown thousands of people from all over the world tuned in to hear her sing to get a sense of home.
Speaking to the Donegal News Sinead said: “I started going live on Facebook during lockdown, myself and my dad, not really thinking anything of it and quite quickly we learned that there was such a growth in followers, there are 28,000 now.
“A lot of Irish abroad, people missing home or have Irish connections were tuning in. We started to develop this connection with a little community of Irish people all around the world.”
The video for the song is extra special because it features the grandchildren in her own family.
Sinead’s niece Ellie Black appears in the video alongside her grandfather Charlie Sweeney.
The video was shot in Fintown where Charlie met his late wife.
Not only is the video special because of this family connection but Sinead is wearing a very special dress belonging to Bridie Gallagher.
The dress came from An Grianán Theatre in Letterkenny which has just been donated 70 handmade pieces of Bridie Gallagher’s clothing from her son. The theatre is appealing for anyone with any photos or stories about the singer that could accompany their collection to contact them.
“I felt privileged and honoured that this came to me at the right time because Bridie Gallagher travelled to America from Ireland during the 50s and 60s when Irish people had to emigrate and they couldn’t afford to come home so she brought a bit of Ireland and a bit of home to them.
“I feel that is exactly why I wanted to do my video as well. It was all really linked.”

Bridie Gallagher pictured with her son Jim Livingstone wearing the dress after a gig in London in the 1970s.

Although lockdown may be over Sinead is continuing her Facebook live sessions as there is such a big fan base. On a weekly basis there is approximately 140,000 viewers tuning in to the show.
“It is opening up another platform for me,” said Sinead.
‘A wee sprig of green’ is now available on Spotify and iTunes and the video can be viewed on the Sinead Black Music Facebook page.
