Pensioner (87) dies in Gortahork house fire

THE WEST Donegal pensioner tragically lost his life in a house fire yesterday has been named as Jimmy ‘Tom’ McCafferty (87).

The blaze broke out at the single storey house at Glasserchoo outside Gortahork in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Fire crews from Gweedore and Falcarragh attended the scene and the body Mr McCafferty was recovered. It is understood he was the only person in the house at the time.

Mr McCafferty was well-known in the locality and relatives and neighbours are shocked at the tragedy.

His body was removed to Letterkenny General Hospital last night for the purpose of a post mortem examination while the scene was preserved for technical examination.

A full investigation has been launched into the cause of the blaze, but it is understood Gardai do not suspect foul play.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be confirmed.
