THE sudden death of Seamus McGeidigh on Monday was learned of with great sadness across Donegal and further afield.
Station manager with Raidio na Gaeltachta in Derrybeg, Seamus was 55 years old. He lived at Ardsbeg with his wife Dolores.
Seamus, who succeeded Edel Ni Chuarrain as editor of the station, had presented the popular Barrscealta programme yesterday before taking ill.
On Saturday evening he did a live broadcast of the Donegal and Monaghan Ulster championship semi-final game from Kingspan Breffni Park and, post match, he was in great form as he chatted with his colleagues as we all looked forward to another long and successful summer following the fortunes of the Donegal team.
One of life’s true gentlemen, Seamus was always more than generous with his time and mentored many young journalists down through the years. A true professional, Seamus always maintained the very highest standards in the profession.
He had that beautiful Irish blas and his commentary on Gaelic Games was legendary.
Devastated
Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher said he was “devastated’ to hear of Seamus’ sudden death.
“I am devastated to have learned of the tragic and untimely passing of Seamus. He was at a true professional as an administrator and journalist.
“There is a dark cloud over all Irish speaking communities throughout Ireland. My sincere sympathy to Dolores and family and to his colleagues in Raidio Na Gaeltachta,” he said.
Minister Joe McHugh said his heart goes out to his family and to his colleagues in Raidio Na Gaeltachta.
“Seamus has left a strong legacy in his contribution to community, current affairs and sport. His love for the language and for his inspirational way of encouraging others to speak the language is something I would have felt first hand,” he said.
