Shock as ambulance mounts footpath to avoid Letterkenny traffic

A MOTORIST approaching the Polestar roundabout in Letterkenny has expressed their dismay after witnessing an ambulance mount the footpath to avoid heavy traffic congestion.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, has reignited the debate surrounding traffic delays in Donegal’s largest town.

Taking to social media, the frustrated motorist said: “An ambulance had to mount the footpath to get through the traffic incoming to the Polestar roundabout.

“The set up here is putting lives at risk.

“The concrete central reservation needs to go so the two lane traffic can split and allow our emergency services up the centre.”

Agreeing with the motorist, local Aontú representative Rebecca McDaid said change is needed now.

“Let’s hope that common sense will prevail,” she said.

Another motorist branded the road a “total disgrace” and questioned where health and
safety considerations are for both emergency staff and patients.

Describing Friday’s incident as an “absolute shambles”, another local added: “Some poor soul will pay the price because of delays getting to hospital.”

The incident also sparked renewed calls for the construction of a bridge across the Swilly to help ease traffic congestion in the town.

“Build the bridge,” a frustrated local urged.

“It is the only and obvious solution.

“Do we have to wait until someone dies in an ambulance for action to be taken?”
