Shock and sadness following passing of Jimmy Logue

THERE has been widespread shock and sadness following the unexpected passing of Jimmy Logue, a beloved character from Downings.

Mr Logue passed away suddenly on Easter Sunday, April 20.

Last March, Mr Logue featured in a Donegal News article in which he described’s the Local Link bus service a “life-saver” after he was involved in a serious road accident in 2020, which left him unable to drive.

Following the collision, Mr Logue was left with no car and no confidence on the road. Instead, he had to find another way to commute and began using the vital service at least three times a week.

His Requiem Mass took place in the Church of St John the Baptist on Tuesday. Addressing the congregation, Very Rev Charles Byrne PP said Mr Logue’s sad passing will forever be etched in the community’s memories.

Born on August 2, 1959, Mr Logue went to primary school in Scoil Naomh Bríd before progressing to secondary school in Falcarragh and finishing his studies in Maynooth.

“From a very young age, he always had a great interest in history and maybe especially, in church or in ecclesiastical history,” Very Rev Byrne said.

“He had a great memory of historical facts and at primary school he was often told to stand up in front of the class and show his ability to list key dates and facts.

“He was the same in secondary school, he had a great knowledge.

“He had an abundance of books, on both history and politics.”

During his working life, Mr Logue spent time working with his father in Sheephaven Seafoods.

He had a great passion for travel, visiting cities and famous buildings. But above all, he loved nothing more than talking to people.

“Whether it was on the seat outside of Boyce’s Centra on a Friday morning, or maybe in the last year, in the day centre where he went to swap stories and knowledge with others there,” Very Rev Byrne said.

“We will all miss his presence among us.

“And I’m sure Jimmy would have loved to be able to tell the story himself, of passing away, in the way that he did on a historical date, Easter Sunday.”

Burial took place after the Mass in the adjoining cemetery.

Mr Logue is the beloved son of the late Cáit and Dan and brother of Bríd.

He is regretted by his nephew and nieces John, Kitty, Sarah and Anna and their families.
